A water cooler is a kitchen appliance, which freezes and dispenses water. Usually, they are divided into two categories; bottled and bottle-less water coolers. Bottled water coolers need delivery of water in big bottles from dealers, whereas bottle-less water coolers are directly connected to water supply.

The most usual type of water cooler is wall fixed unit, and this cooler is directly connected to water supply tank. Such water coolers are commonly called drinking fountain or water fountains. The machine holds some reserves of chilled water, so, user doesn’t need to wait for water to get chilled.

Historical Perspective

In early days, people used to cool water by pouring ordinary water into small pots. Then, they used to keep a wet cloth on the pots; after a while, the water used to get cooled, and that was the traditional method to cool water, which is still adopted in villages, and rural areas even today.

Types of Water Coolers

There are two types of water coolers. They are bottle-less water coolers and portable water coolers. Some of the important aspects of both types of water cooler are discussed herein.

The name is very much indicative of the fact that this type of water cooler doesn’t require separate water bottles. It has an inlet, which is connected to water supply. Through this inlet, water passes from water tank to water cooler. In comparison to bottled water cooler, it looks very simple and nice. Since it doesn’t require any additional bottle, it is compact and lightweight.

One of the biggest advantages associated with Portable Water Coolers is their portability. They can be transported to any desured place with minimum effort. It is designed in such a way, that if you want to relocate the portable water cooler, you can just pluck the pipe that is attached to inlet and then move, and fix it back at the desired place and connect the inlet with water supply pipe.

Working principle of Water Cooler

Each water cooler has a compressor located at cooler’s back side, which cools water. Electric kettles are installed on some water cooler to heat the water too. After cooling or heating water, separate containers are available to keep these two forms of water separately inside the water cooler. This storage is based on old technology. In case of latest technology, hot or cool water is not stored, and it is supplied immediately as and when required. However, the mechanism required for instant cooling or heating of water is usually a bit expensive.

In addition to this, one more form is bottle-less water coolers. These water coolers don’t have water bottles separately, and are connected directly to tap water. This bottle-less water cooler also supplies both hot and cool water. This water cooler works on the same principle of bottled-water coolers.
